Global; Garden - Game Over?.
Inspired by global warming, this garden is designed to raise awareness of green issues. It will promote public collaboration in the resolution of these issues, as well as dramatically highlight the challenge posed;
‘How on earth can we move from a ‘world on fire to a ‘global garden’?
Burnt trees, burnt ground and blackened walls speak of our current concerns over imminent environmental collapse due to global warming and the abuse of the natural environment whilst hi-tech responsive stepping-stones interrogate the promise of technological answers!
This project will work with over 100 people from three parts of the borough and will provide opportunities for local communities to learn how to design, build, nurture and maintain local landscapes and shared public spaces. The project aims to create shared green spaces and landscapes that will bring the following benefits to the community and especially its most disadvantaged members:
Designed for a leading London Hospital this healing garden boasts a digitally enhanced layout which offers a stimulating journey through the senses, heightening awareness and mood whilst monitoring and promoting recovery and rehabilitation. Designed to be accessible for both disabled and non-disabled users, it contains features such as scented and edible plants, programmable experiences, awesome sights and sounds, with bio sensors linked to screens and apps on the clients
As part of the Design Charity’s ‘Learning Gardens’ initiative in Greenwich London we are working with a local children’s nursery to improve the use of their school playground.
This proposed outdoor learning environment is designed to help preschool children connect with nature, become more active, learn outdoors - grow fresh nutritious food - and have fun.
The Design Charity has one core mission: to donate gardens! To give awe inspiring, fully funded gardens, free of charge to those who most need them, but who can least afford them!
It’s our mission to give gardens that are designed to transform lives and minds, and it is our mission to give these gardens to a wide range of prospective clients: from those who are vulnerable such as the homeless, sick and disabled or those without access to high quality nature and who struggle to survive in our increasingly polluted towns and cities.
As well as designing and building gardens for worthy causes, we offer education and training in gardening, food growing and permaculture practices. We are currently launching a series of projects in the Borough of Greenwich working with a children's nursery; a social housing estate and a residential care home.
In sum, we are looking to transform the environment in selected community venues with the collaboration of community members who will be empowered to fully participate in the creation and maintenance of their environment.
Our landscape gardens and environments are designed to heal!
Research evidence suggests some of the benefits of making spaces of awe and restoration are: a reduction in cortisol, a fall in blood pressure and in heart rate after a few hours immersed in nature, as well as a 40% increase in natural killer cells after just three days. Increases in pro-social behaviour and generosity were measured at USC university in America by merely instructing student to look up at tall trees for a minute
Our gardens and environments are increasingly responsive with the use of embedded computation, sensors and locative technology. For example our 'Global Impact Garden' - Hampton Court 2020 - raises public awareness and interrogates the theme of global warming with hi-tech responsive stepping stones and a sensor driven rain curtain that controls access to the paradise garden which hopefully lies beyond our current fears of apocalypse!
We are actively seeking worthy causes. Do you feel your community qualifies? Does your community need a garden/landscape? A garden to help your community heal, develop and grow or simply to rest, relax and play together...Please contact us now!
